말보로맨(The Marlboro Man) 말보로맨(Marlboro Man)은 1954년부터 시작된 미국 필립모리스(Philip Morris)담배회사의 광고 캠페인 캐릭터로서 시카고에 본사를 둔 광고회사 레오 버넷(Leo Burnett)에 의해 제작되었다. 말보로맨은 애드 에이지(Ad Age)가 선정한 20세기 최고의 10대 광고와 아이콘(Icons)에 선정될 정도로 역사적으로 유명한 광고 캠페인이자 광고 캐릭터이다. 말보로 담배는 1924년 "오월처럼 부드럽다(Mild as May)"는 슬로건으로 여성용 담배로 소개하였으나, 1954년 말보로맨을 활용한 남성용 광고로 리포지셔닝(repositioning)하여 성공한 사례이다.
말보로맨은 카우보이(Cowboy)를 상징으로 하여 "말보로 카우보이(Marlboro Cowboy)"와 "말로로 컨트리(Marlboro Country)" 캠페인으로 불린다. 미국에서는 1950년대 흡연이 해로운 효과를 유발한다는 과학적 데이터가 제시됨에 따라 필터 담배(filtered cigarettes)에 집중하게 되었고, 필터 담배는 여성용으로 인식하게 되어 대부분의 담배회사는 필터의 기술을 광고하였으나, 말보로는 남성용 사용자 이미지 포지셔닝 광고를 제작하였다. 말보로에 제안된 광고는 남성적인 캐릭터로서 카우보이가 첫번째 시리즈로 제시되었으며 기타 선장(sea captains), 역도선수(weightlifters), 종군기자(war correspondents), 건설노동자(construction workers) 등이 제시되었다.
레오 버넷은 말보로맨의 남성적인 아이콘으로 1949년 발행된 라이프지(Life magazine)에 소개된 Leonard McCombe의 사진으로서 텍사스의 카우보이 클레런스 헤일리 롱(Clarence Hailey Long Jr., 1910~1978)
를 모델로 삼았다. 최초의 말보로맨은 배우 로버트 "바비" 모리스(Robert "Bobby" Norris)로 영화 배우 존 웨인과 함께 사진을 찍은 모습이 레오버넷의 광고 담당자의 눈에 띄어 발탁되었다고 한다. 모리스는 1953년부터 목장을 운영하였고 실제는 비흡연자로 14년간 말보로 광고 모델로 활동하다 자녀들에게 모범적이지 않다는 이유로 광고 모델을 그만 두었으며 2019년에 사망하였다.
말보로맨 광고는 영화 The Long Goodbye(1973), Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991), Fargo (1996), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Thank You for Smoking (2005) 등에 영향을 주었으며, 음악으로는 "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?"에 가사 "Where is my Marlboro Man?"이, "People of the Sun" 에 가사 "I'm the Marlboro Man"이, "Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo"에 가사 "The Marlboro Man died of cancer/And he wasn't a rocket scientist when he was healthy/ha ha ha", "Dirt Road Anthem"에 "The king in the can and the Marlboro Man"이 사용되었다. 그외에도 "When I'm watchin' my TV and a man comes on and tells me how white my shirts can be, but he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me", "Marlboro Man", "Big Green Country", "Marlboro Man, Jr.", 등에 영향을 주었다. 사진에서도 영향을 주었다.
