Ray Charles (레이 찰스)는 1930년 미국 태생으로 7살 때 녹내장에 걸려 시각장애인이 되었다. 레이 찰스는 소울(soul) 음악의 대부로 불리며 2004년 74세로 사망하였다. 1981년 헐리우드 명예의 거리에, 1986년 로큰롤 명예의 전당에 등록되었고 1998년 폴라음악상을 수상하였다. 2008년 미국의 음악잡지 롤링스톤의 역사상 가장 위대한 가수 100인(100Greatest Singers of All Time) 중 2위로 선정되었다.
