인어, 人魚, mermaid : 상반신은 젊은 여성, 하반신은 물고기의 꼬리를 지닌, 바다 속에 사는 전설 속의 생물이다. 인어족(人魚族, merpeople, merfolk)은 남성과 여성 인어를 포괄하여 부르는 명칭으로 유럽, 라틴아메리카, 아시아, 아프리카 등 세계의 여러 문화권에는 인어에 관한 전설이 존재하지만 인어의 형태과 특징이 전혀 다르다.
서양의 인어 개념은 The Western concept of mermaids as beautiful, seductive singers may have been influenced by the 그리스 신화에서 등장하는 반은 새와은(half-birdlike) 세이렌(siren)에서 출발하여 기독교 시대를 거치면서 반은 물고기형태(half-fishlike) 형태로 변화하였다.
