시드니 도심에서 서쪽으로 약 14km 정도의 거리에 있으며, 기원전 3만년경부터 원주민이 거주했으며 1788년에 영국인이 도시를 형성하였다. 도시의 이름은 원주민 부족인 다루그인(Darug)의 언어로 '수원지'를 의미하는 '바라마다'(Baramada) 또는 '장어들이 사는 땅'을 의미하는 '부라마타'(Burramatta)에서 유래한 이름이라고 한다.
패러매타는 호주 국가 유산으로 지정된 건물(패러매타 시청, Parramatta Town Hall, 1883)과 공원(Parramatta Park), 호수(Lake Parramatta) 등이 시드니 도심과 연결되는 강(Parramatta River)가 있어 페리(Ferry)가 운행되고 있다. 그외에도 1820년 완공된 창기병(槍騎兵) 막사 랜서 배럭스(Lancer Barracks)가 있다.
