괭이밥은 고양이밥이라는 뜻으로 고양이가 소화가 되지 않을 때 뜯어 먹는 풀이라는 의미로 지어진 이름이라고 한다. 산이 있어 잎과 줄기가 시금한 맛이나며 한자로는 산거초(酸車草), 작장초(酢漿草)라고 불린다.

 

자주색 꽃이 피는 괭이밥은 자주 괭이밥으로 불린다.
