프랑스 출신의 인상파 화가(impressionist painter) 클로드 모네(Oscar-Claude Monet, 1840 – 1926)는 1871년 약 반 년 정도 살면서 네덜란드 잔담 지역에 가족과 함께 머물면서 잔담 인근 지역을 그린 4개의 풍경화와 1개의 초상화를 포함하여 총 25개의 작품을 남겼다. 잔담(Zaandam)은 네덜란드(Netherlands)의 수도인 암스테르담(Amsterdam)에서 북쪽으로 13km 정도 거리로 암스테르담과 가까운 곳에 위치해 에 잔(Zaan)강을 따라 경관이 수려하며 인근에는 풍차로 유명한 잔서스한스(Zaanse Schase) 등이 있어 모네가 그림을 그리기에 좋은 환경을 제공하였다.
